  • June, 2003: OIT Introduces New Windows File Server; Novell Servers Migrate
The contents of the five administrative Novell servers will be migrated to a new windows-based server (WINFS). Complete information can be found at http://pcsystems.princeton.edu/NovellMigration.

  • June 17, 2003: Remote Access to use LDAP password instead of Unix password
Beginning on June 17, 2003, the University's dial-in service will begin to use the LDAP password instead of the Unix password. This change requires user intervention if a user's LDAP and Unix passwords are not the same string. More information is available at http://helpdesk/scripts/headlines/view.pl#headline277.

  • July 1, 2003: Native Password Changing Ending; All Password Management to be done through P-Synch
As of July 1, 2003, the following systems will no longer allow their passwords to be changed on the native systems:

    • the OIT IMAP Server
    • the OIT Unix Systems
    • the Princeton Domain

These passwords will only be managed through the central password facility P-Synch (located at www.princeton.edu/account).

  • July 14, 2003: Hostmaster to use LDAP password for authentication
Complete details can be found at http://www.net.princeton.edu/announcements/hostdb-password-change-nis-to-ldap.html .

  • July 31, 2003: OIT Unix "sesamest" Servers to be Retired
The Office of Information Technology (OIT) will decommission the Unix public servers know as "sesamest" (elmo, oscar, and zoe) on July 31, 2003. The sesamest servers have provided a version of the Unix operating system called IRIX. OIT will continue to provide Linux and Solaris Unix server environments for campus use. By reducing the number of different Unix operating systems, OIT expects to concentrate and improve security and support for the remaining Solaris and Linux servers. For more information about Unix systems and services provided by OIT, please visit http://www.princeton.edu/~psg/unix.

  • August 1-5, 2003: Blackboard to Upgrade to version 6; new features available
Blackboard, the courseware system used by Princeton, will be upgraded to version 6 beginning on August 1. The upgrade process will be completed by August 5. For details about the new features, please see http://www.princeton.edu/as/Blackboard/what_new_instructors_bb6.pdf.

  • August, 2003: Web Browser standard changing from Netscape to Internet Explorer
To accomodate changes in global web publishing practices, as well as changes to the PeopleSoft infrastructure, the standard for web browser use on campus will become Internet Explorer (current version: 6.0). DeSC computers will receive this version as a push over the summer; other computers should be upgraded to the current version of Internet Explorer. This change will allow for all administrative users to begin using the new PeopleSoft web-based applications with Internet Explorer 6 without having to update the browser themself. OIT will continue to support Netscape products until the campus is fully migrated (see below).

  • August, 2003: OIT moves customer service facility to the Frist Campus Center
OIT will launch a new customer service center in the Frist Campus Center in August, 2003. This centrally-located service center will provide the following services:
    • Software Sales
    • Telecommunications and Voice Processing Services
    • Account Management (quota increases, password assistance, etc.)
    • Dormnet Equipment Distribution (ethernet cables, TigerTV boxes)
    • Ethernet and Wireless Card Sales
    • Personal Computer Consultations
    • Hardware Support Repairs

This change moves these services from the various locations in which they are currently residing. Once the OIT service center opens in Frist, all consulting, distribution and sales provided by OIT will be done in this one location.

  • August, 2003: VPN Service migrates to Cisco Hardware
The OIT Virtual Private Network (VPN) service will change from a server-based infrastructure to a router-based infrastructure. This change should not present any changes to the user that is configured to use the server "vpn.princeton.edu" in their VPN connection.

  • August, 2003: PeopleSoft HR/SA Upgrade to version 8.0
The PeopleSoft HR/SA applications (including CIS) will be upgraded to the new version (8.0). This change will require all users of HR/SA applications to begin using the web-based facility brought about in this upgrade.

The new version of SCORE goes live for course selection.
